Université de Montréal  Département de physique

Why physics?

In order to understand how nature works in all its forms, be it the infinitely large, the infinitely small, or the infinitely complex. Because physics is the basis of all the other sciences; physicists do not study only stars and quarks, but also work in other areas, from medicine to semiconductors to the economy to video games. In short, physics leads to everything!

Why physics at the Université de Montréal?

From the point of view of academic training, the Department of Physics offers a high level of training in physics, as well as in physics-mathematics and physics-computer science.

  • You can therefore obtain a high level of training adapted to your talents and tastes.

The professors of the Department of Physics also hire, each summer, nearly forty undergraduate students to help them with their research} — that's almost all the students who wish to do summer research.

  • If you want to quickly experience research, this is the best place in Québec!

The professors excel both in teaching and in research. At the level of research, the department can count on an exceptional expertise in astrophysics, condensed matter physics, particle physics, plasma physics, biophysics, and medical physics. Many members of the department have developed close collaborations with researchers at the Polytechnical School (École Polytechnique) and at hospital research centres, leading to a critical mass, and allowing access to many research instruments. The Department of Physics at the Université de Montréal is second in Canada regarding research grants, behind only the University of Toronto.

  • At the Université de Montréal, you will be surrounded by professors who care about you and who will introduce you to international research.

Study physics or engineering?

Many students (and parents!) ask themselves this question. The answer, of course, depends on your tastes and interests:

  • If you want to understand the great laws of nature — quantum mechanics, general relativity, etc. — then physics is for you!
  • If you like to solve complex problems which are out of the ordinary, then physics is the right path to take!
  • If you want to use your knowledge to invent new theories which explain fascinating physical phenomena or new technologies which revolutionize the world.
  • If you are passionate about stars, elementary particles, nanostructures, or the fundamental behaviour of cells, a B.Sc.\ in physics will open doors for you and allow you to continue in these areas!
  • If you want a well-paying and stimulating career in companies of high technology, governmental laboratories, or in universities, you can't go wrong by choosing physics!
